Tara Gamby, founder of the group, was involved in many Pug groups. But, she also had a Poodle and a long-haired Chihuahua sitting at home jealous while she was out with her pug, Zena. She realized there was nothing out there for all different types of dogs. Everything was so specialized. So, she decided to start a play group for all small dogs!
The very first Small Dog Event was on April 17, 2005. A lot of people showed up with their small dogs. There were Pugs, Poodles, Italian Greyhounds, Cook-a-Poos, Papillons, Chihuahuas, Jack Russells, Scotties, you name it they were there!!! and they all got along GREAT!!!!!
Before you knew it, Tara was realizing the group was growing and she definitely needed some help. So, she thought about who would be the best people that she could trust for the job. Cheri Biggs and Lisa Laurro! Unfortunately Lisa has since moved to Tenessee and is no longer an organizer of the group, she will be missed and so will her Pug Nico.

The name of the group has recently changed from the Rochester Small Dog Playgroup to the Rochester Canine Playgroup since we now have groups not only for Small Dogs but for Big Dogs as well.

We now have the following groups:

  • Pugs
  • Doxies
  • Chihuahua
  • Big Dogs
  • Small Dogs

We have approximately 600 members and growing strong!

Members of the Rochester Canine Playgroups participate in different charitable events throughout the year and we also help to raise donations for local animal shelters at our events each month.
